Theories of Art Criticism

Please create a new blog post and name it Theories of Art. You will all need to take notes.

We will discuss the 4 Aesthetic Theories of Art.

We can find out where an artwork fits in with thses theories by the following steps:

Describe - Tell what you see (the visual facts)

Analyze - Mentally separate the parts or elements, thinking in terms of textures,shapes/forms, light/dark or bright/dull colors, types of lines, and sensory qualities. In this step consider the most significant art principles that were used in the artwork.
Describe how the artist used them to organize the elements.

Today you should be seriously working on your project. It is due in 4 classes!
To self check your progress, ask yourself  the following:

Are you working on your project at least 90% of the time we have in class? If not, how much?

What specific skills are you developing this morning?
Are you documenting your  progress on a regular basis?
What artists are you investigating that relate to your work?
How are you reflecting or refining your work as you go along?

The Big Goals for this class

This class is roughly based on the AP Studio Art and IB Art programs. Both have a lot in common.

Your goals are to:

  • Create 5 resolved (complete) artworks ready to be presented in a personal show or portfolio
  • Explore a personal, central interest as intensively as possible in any medium.
  • Show growth and discovery of your chosen mediums
  • Create an overall conceptually related theme throughout your works
  • Include a Process Portfolio that documents your processes of thinking and creating

Your work should demonstrate understanding of Aesthetic Theories as well as the Elements and Principles of Design

You should demonstrate both conceptual; and technical skill in your works.

You are expected to come to class prepared to work the entire class.
